THE WALK
This is our first dojo that we started in 2017 in the kolkata initiatives center. The tatami are arranged before every class by the group that arrives. They are stacked back after each class by the group that will leave. There is a rhythm and discipline that each batch has set themselves. two older students manage the unstacking of tatami and placing them in correct order. the new students take on the responsibility of fixing them.
We have seen heavy dropouts in this second lockdown assuming that it has claimed a lot of livelihoods and enthusiasm. but we had new students waiting this Wednesday, which is a class for complete beginners and kids below 7 who just want to roll , somersaults and cartwheels. We let kids claim their "own" space through ukemi. As they grow up we move them up with the older kids who you see in this video. This is the batch on Sunday and we teach 2 batches back to back. We have divided our batches between, beginners, intermediate and advanced to cope with overcrowding and be safe during this pandemic. Our motivational milestones are very simple. little privileges that we take for granted are big gestures in our dojo. like those who receive their dogi ( practice uniform) are looked up at. Currently we have no funds and we need dogis for at least 10 students desperately to keep their motivations up. we urge you to consider donating a new/ used but clean dogi (all sizes) so that we can bring some sparkle into their eyes. you could buy a dogi from your nearest sports shop or message us for an alternative way of helping.
we have a support page on our blog where you can read more
